“Hi, I’m Dr. Debbie, at Animal Care Clinic. Today I’m here to talk to you about the water treadmill and how it can benefit dogs with arthritis or neurological issues as well as dogs that have had surgery and dogs that are overweight. This is Penny, she is 12 years old and she was born with hip dysplasia which has left her sore her whole life, now that she’s older she also has arthritis in her knees and elbows. As part of her therapy she walks in this water treadmill once a week. The warm therapeutic water takes the weight off her legs making it easier for her to exercise and strengthen her entire body.
It takes a dog about 3-5 sessions to learn how to use the treadmill, we can use all kinds of treats or toys to motivate them to walk in the water – even dogs who don’t like water, learn quickly to love the water treadmill. If a dog is really weak or has severe neurologic issues, starting twice a week is more beneficial, but most dogs will maintain well with a once a week treatment. Water treadmill therapy is a great tool for dogs, but used by itself it might not be as effective as used with other forms of veterinary rehabilitation. We offer supplements, osteo manipulation, cold laser therapy and home exercise programs in addition to the water treadmill. After just 5-6 sessions Penny went from having a hard time walking to her old habits of chasing squirrels up the trees.
