12 1/2 yo doggie enjoying hydrotherapy workout in her new Intex Pool! Minimal investment, great return! This dog has a painful right shoulder & is able to strengthen with the buoyancy & resistance of the water without weight on the joint. Great fun for water loving canines!
She was also diagnosed with hemangioma sarcoma (HSA) 11 months ago and given a 90 day average survival rate. This is a very aggressive form of canine cancer and common among certain breeds. It is a vascular tumor in her spleen although HSA can form in any organ – typically spleen, liver or heart. Typical veterinary recommendations are to avoid strenuous exercise for fear the tumor may rupture and there will be a bleed out. Weighing the pros and cons however of keeping a dog sedentary – especially one that still wishes to engage in activities – left me with choosing exercise for my dog that was challenging enough for her musculoskeletal, cardio and respiratory systems to promote metabolic health, yet with low chances of external impacts that could cause rupture of a vascular tumor. The hydro therapy is ideal – for a water loving dog! There is of course the chance of the tumor bleeding with no impact at all. A chance and balance one may wish to evaluate on a personal and individual basis.
