Labradors are generally very healthy dogs. They are smart, active and strong and live an average lifespan. Most Labs will be healthy as long as they are cared for properly. But, there are a few things that they are sometimes prone to:
Obesity is a big issue in Labs. While many will maintain a healthy weight as long as they are fed well, there do possess a predisposition to obesity which can cause a lot of other nasty symptoms and illnesses.
Labs often end up with joint issues, such as arthritis, because of their obesity. If your dog is overweight and then begins to show signs of joint pain, it is imperative that you find a way to help them to lose weight.
An obese dog is likely to become fatigued, lethargic, depressed and/or nervous. A sign of depression in dogs is a lack of appetite. A telltale sign of anxiety in canines is obsessive licking or biting of the skin or fur. Of course, they may suffer from these issues without being overweight as well. But, either way, a healthy diet and a lot of exercise, socialization, and play can help a great deal.
3. Separation anxiety
This type of anxiety has nothing to do with being overweight at all and it is important that Lab owners know the difference between generalized anxiety and separation anxiety. Separation anxiety will only happen when you are leaving, or gone. Separation anxiety is best managed by creating a calm routine when leaving the house. If it persists, talk to the vet.
